Jaipur : An alcoholic was arrested for setting his wife and two teenaged daughters on fire in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district Friday, police said.

The man was unemployed and used to hold his wife responsible for his problems in life, police added.

According to police, the incident took place near Merta town in the district, some 250 km from Jaipur. The deceased have been identified as Saroj (35) and her two daughters, Suman (13) and Seema (14).

“Saroj and her husband Ramniwas used to have fights over petty domestic issues. During preliminary investigation, it has come up that one of the reasons over which he was annoyed with his wife was that the couple did not have a son. Ramniwas used to hold Saroj responsible for his poor condition in life,” said a police officer.

Ramniwas returned home after consuming alcohol Friday afternoon.

“He picked up a fight with his wife. In a fit of rage, he poured kerosene on her body and set not only her, but also the two daughters on fire,” said the officer.

The man fled from the house, police said adding that his wife and two girls were rushed to hospital by neighbours. They died while undergoing treatment.

“We arrested the man later,” said the officer.
