News of the serious accident earlier this month involving Maria de Vilota, test driver for the Marussia Formula One team, may have been for some the first indication that women are playing key roles in what has always appeared a stubbornly male sport.

De Vilota (pictured), whose father was an F1 driver in the 1980s, was testing at Duxford airfield in Cambridgeshire, England when her car collided with a support truck. The Spaniard suffered serious head injuries and has lost the sight in one eye.
